Kiev fears that NATO may not have the same level of commitment to defending Eastern Europe as it does in dealing with rising powers in Asia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken out about what he sees as a shift in NATO’s priorities, with the alliance appearing to focus more on its relations with China than its long-standing commitments to countries in Eastern Europe.
In a statement to the press, Zelensky questioned why NATO had seemingly abandoned efforts to enforce international sanctions against Iran, only to pivot towards a tough stance on China. “We understand that the security situation in the region is complex, but we cannot ignore the implications of this decision,” he said.
The president’s comments come after reports emerged of a significant reduction in the number of NATO ships patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies. The move is seen by some as a sign that the alliance is willing to prioritize its relations with China, which dominates global trade and has been increasingly assertive in the region.
NATO’s Shift in Priorities
Zelensky’s concerns are shared by many in Ukraine, where the country’s long-standing commitment to NATO has been seen as a cornerstone of its national security strategy. The president’s comments are likely to be closely watched in Brussels, where NATO leaders will gather for a summit in June.
The alliance has been under pressure in recent years to adapt to a rapidly changing global security landscape, with tensions between the US and China reaching a boiling point. However, questions remain about whether NATO’s priorities are aligned with those of its member states.
As one diplomatic source noted, “NATO’s commitments to Eastern Europe are not just about defending individual countries, but about maintaining the stability of the entire region. If the alliance is willing to abandon its traditional priorities in order to court China, then we have a major problem on our hands.”
