In a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran, US forces have begun a second search and rescue mission in Iran to locate a missing F-15 jet crew member. The operation follows a previous search, which concluded earlier in the week after yielding no results.
The Pentagon confirmed yesterday that the F-15 jet, part of a US-led flight exercise in international airspace near the Iranian border, lost contact on the evening of March 22. An initial search and rescue mission was launched in an area approximately 15 miles outside the city of Isfahan, with Iranian authorities assisting US forces. However, despite efforts from both sides, the missing F-15 crew member remains unaccounted for.
US Navy Admiral Mark Mays, Commander of the US Naval Forces Central Command, said, ‘We greatly appreciate the assistance and cooperation being provided by the Iranian government in our search efforts. The safety of the missing crew member remains our top priority and we are doing everything possible to locate and recover them safely.’
Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, has publicly stated his willingness to assist in the search mission. Speaking to state television yesterday, he said, ‘We are fully committed to supporting our American friends in this time of need. The Iranian people understand the importance of respecting diplomatic norms and will continue to cooperate fully with US authorities.’
In related developments, a team of US and Iranian officials is meeting to discuss the incident and identify any contributing factors that may have led to the loss of contact with the F-15 jet. US officials have stressed that the search mission is not related to any ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of the operation.
The ongoing search efforts have resulted in an increased military presence in the region, with additional US and Iranian forces being deployed to assist in the operation. Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over the potential risks associated with the increased military activity in the area.
US State Department spokesperson, Ned Price, has stated that the department ‘will continue to work closely with the Iranian government to ensure a safe and secure outcome for the missing F-15 crew member.’ In light of the current diplomatic situation, many are watching the events unfold for any indication of improved relations between the two nations, one day at a time.
In a joint statement, a Pentagon spokesperson added that, ‘The safety of US personnel remains a top priority and we will continue to do everything in our power to locate our missing crew member.’
