DOHA, QATAR – In a shocking case of cybercrime, residents of Qatar have been receiving video calls from hackers posing as members of the Qatari police force. The brazen scam has left many locals perplexed and concerned for their safety.
According to reports, the hackers utilize video calling apps to initiate contact, often with a sense of urgency, claiming that the recipient’s identity or bank account is under investigation. The scammers then demand sensitive information, including financial details and identification documents, from the bewildered victims.
“It was really frightening,” said an unnamed resident of Doha. “The person on the other end was claiming to be from the police department and told me that my credit card was compromised. I was worried, but then I hung up and called the actual police. They assured me that it was a scam.”
Qatari authorities have been informed of the suspicious activities, and experts are urging citizens to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited video calls. “In general, residents are advised to be wary of unsolicited calls or messages from anyone claiming to be from a government agency or financial institution,” said a spokesperson for the Qatari police force.
Experts believe that the scammers may be utilizing a technique called “phishing” to obtain sensitive information. Phishing involves sending fake messages or calls, masquerading as a legitimate entity, to trick victims into revealing their personal or financial data.
“We recommend that residents never share their passwords, financial information, or identification documents via video call or unsecured messaging platforms,” said a cybersecurity expert based in Doha.
As authorities investigate the incident, residents are being advised to remain vigilant and not engage with unsolicited callers claiming to be from the police or other official bodies. “By being aware of these tactics, we can prevent such scams and protect our citizens’ personal and financial data,” said a spokesperson for the Qatari government.
