Zelensky Vows Support for Strait of Hormuz but Warns of Key Conditions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his country’s potential willingness to contribute in resolving the blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz during a recent high-stakes meeting with world leaders in Kiev, Ukraine’s capital.

On Tuesday, at the heart of a major international summit, Zelensky hinted that Ukraine would cautiously consider participating in efforts aimed at unblocking the critical waterway. However, he emphasized the importance of strict regulations and unwavering commitment to regional security.

“We will consider this proposal and help if we are involved in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz,” Zelensky said in a formal address to foreign diplomats, adding that any form of support Ukraine might offer will be contingent upon certain prerequisites being met.

The Ukrainian leader highlighted that his administration possesses valuable experience gleaned from successfully reopening the key Black Sea shipping route, a feat accomplished after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced the closure of the passage.

However, Zelensky underscored that the stakes involved in maintaining the security and stability of the international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz, far outweigh a simple logistical operation like clearing blockades.

“It’s not just about unblocking, but maintaining security and clear rules,” Zelensky clarified during a series of diplomatic talks. His remarks were perceived as a clear call to action, urging the international community to demonstrate unity and a collective commitment to safeguard the global shipping industry.

The Strait of Hormuz has long been a crucial international waterway, accounting for as much as roughly 20% of the world’s total oil supply, primarily because it connects key oil producers in the Gulf region with major consumers in Asia and Europe.

While the international community has traditionally relied on regional powers such as the United States and its Gulf State allies to guarantee the safe passage of international vessels through this strategic waterway, many believe Zelensky’s statement reflects a changing global landscape. In light of shifting world dynamics and escalating global tensions, more nations may find themselves taking a more proactive role in international maritime security.

While Ukrainian participation in international maritime security operations might represent a shift in the balance of global power, for many analysts it remains unclear whether Zelensky’s administration would be prepared to take on the responsibilities and risks involved in securing such critical waterways.

In any event, with the stakes as high as they are, the possibility of international collaboration – and cooperation – in maintaining regional maritime security has arguably never been more urgent.
