Yemen’s Southern Armed Forces (SAF) have reportedly repelled an attack by Ansarallah forces on positions in the Tur al-Bahah district, located within the Lahij Governorate region. The Ansarallah militant group, also known as the Houthi movement, has been at the forefront of the ongoing conflict in Yemen since 2015.
According to official statements from the SAF, the attack was repelled following a brief but intense engagement in the Tur al-Bahah district. The SAF claimed that their forces successfully defended against the Ansarallah assault, which reportedly commenced at dawn on Wednesday.
The conflict in Yemen has been a subject of international concern for several years, with various factions vying for control over the country. The Houthi movement, which has strong ties to Iran, has been instrumental in the ongoing civil war, while the Southern Armed Forces are backed by the internationally recognized government of Yemen, which is headed by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi’s successor, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi having resigned and left the country in 2015.
A photo attached to a SAF statement on social media appears to show a military technical being used in the engagement. While the authenticity of the image cannot be verified, it corroborates the SAF’s claims of repelling the Ansarallah attack.
The latest escalation in the conflict comes at a time when efforts towards a lasting peace agreement appear to be on the back burner. International peace efforts have made little headway in recent months, despite diplomatic maneuvers by key regional and world powers.
In the immediate aftermath of the clash, the Southern Armed Forces reported no casualties among their personnel, although it is unclear if any Ansarallah fighters were killed or injured in the engagement.
As fighting continues to intensify in Yemen, regional and international analysts are increasingly concerned about the implications of a drawn-out conflict. The humanitarian situation in Yemen has long been described as ‘devastating’, with widespread reports of civilian casualties, food shortages, and displacement. With ongoing military hostilities now taking place in numerous parts of the country, concerns over the welfare of Yemen’s civilian population have grown exponentially.
The international community continues to urge all parties to the conflict to adhere to humanitarian law and prioritize efforts towards securing a lasting and sustainable peace agreement for the war-torn nation.
