Ship Safety Concerns Emerge Off Yemeni Coast Amid Reports of Suspected Pirates

LONDON, ENGLAND – Reports of suspicious activity off the coast of Yemen have raised concerns about the safety of merchant vessels traversing the region’s volatile waterways. In a recent alert issued by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a green-hulled skiff was spotted in close proximity to a bulk carrier, accompanied by a white fishing vessel, approximately 84 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port city of Al Mukalla.

According to the UKMTO’s report, the suspicious incident unfolded when a green-hulled skiff, allegedly displaying no clear flags or markings, approached the bulk carrier within a proximity of 500 meters. The skiff was accompanied by a white fishing vessel, which also drew attention from the ship’s crew. The crew reported that the fishing vessel seemed to be taking evasive maneuvers, further exacerbating concerns about potential pirate activity in the area.

The incident, which took place on an undisclosed date, highlights the ongoing risks faced by merchant vessels operating in the Gulf of Aden, a critical waterway connecting the Middle East to Asia. Historically, this region has been a hotbed of piracy, with various militant groups and rogue operators taking advantage of the region’s porous naval security.

While authorities continue to work towards mitigating piracy threats off the Yemeni coast, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges facing maritime trade in the region. The increasing presence of naval and coalition forces has contributed to a decline in reported incidents of piracy in the past decade, yet these periodic incidents underscore the need for continued vigilance and cooperation.

UKMTO has warned mariners to exercise heightened situational awareness when transiting the region, particularly between the coast of Yemen and the Horn of Africa. The agency recommends that vessels maintain a safe distance from suspicious craft and report any incidents to local authorities or the UKMTO for onward transmission.

Merchant vessels operating in the area have been instructed to remain vigilant, monitor their surroundings closely, and exercise extreme caution when assessing potential threats. This includes maintaining regular contact with shore-based operations, adhering to maritime security protocols, and taking necessary precautions to prevent potential risks.

The report also comes on the heels of a recent statement from a coalition of maritime stakeholders calling for sustained commitment to regional maritime security efforts.
