OSAMA BIN LADEN RAID ANNIVERSARY: NINETEEN YEARS ON FROM THE SEAL TEAM SIX OPERATION

May 1, 2026, marks the 19th anniversary of a historic event that shook the world’s counter-terrorism landscape. Fifteen years ago, on May 1, 2011, members of the U.S. Navy SEALs, in an operation code-named “Operation Neptune Spear,” carried out a secret night raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This daring raid resulted in the martyrdom of Osama bin Laden, the founder and mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks that claimed thousands of lives.

The raid was a culmination of years of tireless efforts by the U.S. Intelligence Community, which had been tracking bin Laden’s movements and whereabouts. After 9/11, bin Laden, who was then the leader of al-Qaeda, went into hiding, and the U.S. government launched a global manhunt to capture or kill him. The hunt spanned continents, with the U.S. military and intelligence agencies working in tandem to close in on the elusive terrorist leader.

The operation was carried out by SEAL Team Six, an elite unit of the U.S. Navy’s Special Warfare Command. A team of 24 SEALs, led by Commander Scott Moore, was involved in the operation. The SEALs were flown into the compound on stealth helicopters, and upon breaching the building, they quickly overpowered and killed bin Laden. The operation was completed in just over 40 minutes, with all the SEALs safely extracting from the compound.

The aftermath of the operation saw a significant shift in the global counter-terrorism landscape. The loss of Osama bin Laden marked a pivotal moment in the war on terror, a campaign that had been ongoing since 9/11. The operation was widely hailed as a major success for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies, and it sent a clear message to terrorists around the world.

Since then, the U.S. has continued to carry out targeted counter-terrorism operations, including drone strikes and special operations raids. The war on terror has not ended, but the success of Operation Neptune Spear has given the U.S. and its allies a significant advantage in the fight against terrorism.

As we commemorate the 19th anniversary of the raid on Osama bin Laden, it is essential to reflect on the lessons learned and the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism. The operation serves as a reminder of the strength and capabilities of the U.S. military and its unwavering commitment to protecting its citizens and promoting global stability.
