A video released by Hezbollah, a Lebanese-based Shia Islamist organisation, appears to show the targeting of an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) unmanned tactical vehicle (UTV) in the Galilee Forest camp located in northern Israel, local media reported on Thursday, 26 May. The attack is believed to have occurred on the evening of 27 May.
According to eyewitness reports, the Hezbollah-operated “Ababil” fixed-wing precision drone reportedly engaged an IDF UTV vehicle with a precision-guided strike. Local sources have confirmed that the UTV vehicle suffered significant damage, with both occupants reportedly receiving serious injuries in the assault.
Footage shared online and verified by Israeli military sources on 26 May depict a UTV on its side with apparent vehicle overturn damage. Eyewitness testimony corroborates the incident, describing an explosion occurring shortly before the reported attack. It is essential to note at this stage that while the footage has been shared on social media outlets, verification of the authenticity of the drone footage has been confirmed by a select few.
As per Hezbollah, their Ababil drones, a type of precision-guided unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are an essential component of Hezbollahs combat arsenal. The footage also reveals the drone’s ability to operate with high precision, delivering an accurate strike. The group also highlighted the use of the unmanned aerial vehicles in reconnaissance missions and ground-support operations against Israeli forces.
The incident marks an escalation in tensions in the region after an Israeli strike in January this year against a site associated with drone and missile production at the Lebanese International Airport. This was in retaliation to an Iranian-supplied precision-guided drone attack on Israeli forces operating in eastern Syria on 21 January. However, an exact statement from any Israeli official could not be determined in time for publication.
Following the incident, officials in the region have cautioned that any further attacks or escalation must be addressed through diplomatic channels. In light of the tensions arising from the incident, the Israeli military has been put on high alert, and military units stationed on the Lebanon-Israel border have been instructed to remain vigilant.
It is still uncertain whether the recent attack marks the start of a larger Israeli conflict or if tensions will remain de-escalated.
