BEIRUT, LEBANON – Reports have emerged of an Israeli airstrike on Jebchit, a small town in southern Lebanon, raising concerns about escalating tensions between the two countries.
Citizens of Jebchit reported hearing loud explosions around midnight local time, followed by the sight of fires and widespread destruction. Eyewitnesses described the impact as ‘massive’ stating the strike occurred near the town’s residential area. Witnesses from a nearby location have described the explosion sounding like a “huge crash followed by a massive explosion.”
Lebanese authorities have expressed their anger and disappointment over the incident, emphasizing the need for international intervention to stop Israeli military actions that threaten the stability of the region. The Foreign Ministry issued a statement, stating that ” Israel’s actions are flagrant violations of international law and our sovereignty, and we hold the Israeli authorities fully responsible for the consequences of their aggression.”
The airstrike has also raised concerns about the impact on the local Palestinian community in southern Lebanon. Refugees from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), who fled their homeland after decades of displacement, continue to reside in the area, and are still vulnerable to Israeli military attacks.
Israeli officials claim the attack was in response to an ‘operational threat’ emanating from the area in southern Lebanon, however, they have not provided any evidence to support this claim.
Human rights activists and local residents have expressed their concerns over the lack of adequate support and services for those injured and displaced as a result of the strike. “It’s chaos,” said a local activist, who preferred to remain anonymous. “We still don’t have adequate medical care for those who need it, and many people are left homeless.”
The incident has also raised questions about the ongoing presence of Israeli forces along the Lebanese-Israeli border despite the long-standing ceasefire agreement between the two countries. Israeli forces established a military outposts in the surrounding area following the strike.
The international community remains vigilant and closely watches the ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, with many countries calling for immediate restraint from both nations to prevent any further escalation.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has condemned the airstrike and urged both countries to respect international law and resolve disputes peacefully. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and a UN statement has called for “maximum restraint from all parties involved.”
