Montenegrin Authorities, in Cooperation with FBI, Arrest Dual National on Cybercrime Charges

A high-profile cybercrime suspect has been apprehended by Montenegrin police in a joint operation with the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The 39-year-old Iranian-Turkish dual national, whose name has not been disclosed in accordance with local laws, is wanted by U.S. authorities on charges encompassing computer fraud conspiracy, hacking, and identity theft.

According to official reports, the suspect is accused of orchestrating an extensive series of cyberattacks against more than 150 U.S. universities between 2013 and the present day. Estimated financial losses stemming from these illicit activities amount to a staggering $3.4 billion. Authorities have further stated that the stolen data and compromised university accounts were used to benefit the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other Iranian entities, thus allegedly providing financial and logistical support to these organizations.

The arrest took place in the picturesque resort town of Kotor, and the suspect is now being held pending a determination on extradition. Proceedings to this effect will be considered by a court in the capital city of Podgorica. It appears that a formal extradition request from the U.S. will be required prior to the suspect’s transfer to face charges in the United States.

Experts within the cybercrime field have emphasized the complexity and scale of the alleged cyberattacks orchestrated by the suspect. They highlight the significance of this arrest in combating cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice, while also underscoring the need for international cooperation in this realm.

While neither Montenegrin nor U.S. officials have provided further information on the suspect’s identity or background, it is known that the suspect held dual Iranian-Turkish citizenship and resided in Turkey prior to their arrest. U.S. authorities have sought this individual’s cooperation on multiple occasions, without initial success, prior to the joint operation with Montenegrin law enforcement.

Montenegro’s Ministry of Interior has confirmed cooperation with international partners, including the FBI, to combat cybercrime. Efforts are ongoing to address these growing threats to cybersecurity and protect critical infrastructure across the region. As extradition proceedings move forward, U.S. officials will continue to press for the extradition of this high-profile cybercrime suspect to face trial on the aforementioned charges.
