SAUDI ARABIA’S PROJECT MASAM CONTINUES DEMINING EFFORTS IN YEMEN, CLEARS OVER 569,000 LANDMINES

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia – In a significant development in Yemen, Saudi Arabia’s demining initiative, Project Masam, has reported another milestone in its mission to clear landmines and explosive hazards from the war-torn country. Since July 2018, the program has successfully removed a staggering 568,961 landmines and explosive remnants from the territory controlled by the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen.

Project Masam’s latest statistics reveal that the demining teams cleared 7,509 anti-personnel mines, 151,811 anti-tank mines, 401,098 unexploded ordnance, and 8,543 improvised explosive devices from the affected areas. These explosive hazards pose a significant threat to innocent civilians, including children, women, and men, who often inadvertently stumble upon them while going about their daily lives.

In a recent update, Project Masam announced that its demining teams cleared 4,622 landmines and explosive remnants during the first three weeks of June 2026. This impressive feat brings the total number of explosive hazards cleared by the initiative to over 569,000 since its inception in 2018.

The demining efforts of Project Masam have had a profound impact on the lives of Yemenis, particularly in rural areas where access to healthcare, education, and basic services is limited. The clearance of landmines and explosive remnants has enabled communities to rebuild their homes, schools, hospitals, and vital infrastructure, paving the way for economic growth and social development.

Project Masam’s mission to make Yemen safe for civilians has been recognized globally, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other humanitarian organizations acknowledging its efforts. The initiative’s commitment to clearing explosive hazards has not only saved lives but has also facilitated the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations.

As Yemen continues to grapple with the aftermath of the conflict, Project Masam remains committed to its mission of demining the country. With its impressive track record of safely clearing landmines and explosive remnants, the initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of Yemenis for generations to come.

In a statement, Project Masam officials reiterated their commitment to working together with the Yemeni government, humanitarian organizations, and other stakeholders to achieve a mine-free Yemen. Their tireless efforts are a beacon of hope for a brighter future, where Yemenis can live without fear of landmines and explosive hazards.
