Manila, Philippines – In a strongly worded statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippine government has lambasted China for its recent ballistic missile test in the South Pacific, labeling the move a reckless display of military power that poses significant risks to regional stability and the safety of smaller Pacific nations.
“The recent ballistic missile test conducted by China in the South Pacific is a grave concern for our country and the entire Pacific region,” DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo stated in a statement issued late Wednesday. “We strongly condemn this brazen display of military power that shows little regard for the safety, security, and environment of smaller Pacific nations.”
The Chinese ballistic missile test, which took place on Tuesday, has been widely reported by international observers and has sparked immediate concerns among regional powers. The Philippines, along with other Southeast Asian nations, has called for an urgent meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss the implications of the test.
“This provocative act further demonstrates China’s increasing militarization of the South Pacific, which has far-reaching consequences for regional stability and security,” a senior DFA official was quoted. “We urge China to exercise restraint and adhere to international norms and laws in the conduct of its military activities in the region.”
Meanwhile, the United States has also denounced China’s missile test, with Pentagon officials expressing “serious concern” over the implications of the move. Japan and Australia, allies of the United States in the region, have also issued statements condemning the test.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has also weighed in on the issue, stating that the country stands united with its fellow nations in the Pacific in opposing any actions that threaten regional stability and the environment.
The Philippine government has long expressed concerns over China’s expanding military presence in the South Pacific, including the deployment of missiles and other military equipment in the Paracel Islands. The Philippines, along with other regional powers, is seeking to maintain a balance of power in the region and prevent any single nation from dominating the strategic maritime space.
“We urge China to engage in a dialogue with the international community, particularly with the Philippines and other regional nations, to discuss its military activities in the South Pacific,” Secretary Manalo emphasized. “We seek a solution based on shared values and norms that will ensure regional stability and security.”
The reaction from the international community to China’s ballistic missile test has been swift and unified, with the Philippines leading the chorus of condemnation and calls for restraint.
