Tensions Escalate: US Demands China Engage in Meaningful Arms Control Discussions

The U.S. State Department has issued a statement in response to China’s recent test launch of a nuclear-capable submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the Southern Pacific Ocean. According to the statement, the missile was unarmed and landed safely in the designated area.

In the face of China’s continued nuclear buildup, the U.S. has expressed concern over Beijing’s decision to pursue the development of such capabilities. The statement notes that China’s actions are detrimental to global efforts aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear proliferation.

“The United States is working hard to prevent nuclear proliferation, yet China is engaging in the opposite,” the U.S. State Department noted in its statement. “Beijing’s rapid and opaque nuclear weapons buildup is a source of great concern for the region and the global community.”

The U.S. has also reiterated its commitment to engaging in meaningful arms control discussions with China. The U.S. has long advocated for regularized notification arrangements for intercontinental-range ballistic missile and space launches, similar to those practiced by other member states of the P5 (a group consisting of the five recognized nuclear powers: the U.S., China, Russia, France, and the U.K.).

“We continue to urge China to engage in meaningful arms control discussions and commit to a regularized notification arrangement for all intercontinental-range ballistic missiles and space launches,” the U.S. State Department said. “Consistency in these commitments is essential for maintaining global stability.”

The U.S. has also reaffirmed its defense commitments to its allies and partners worldwide. The statement underscores the importance of maintaining stability and security across the world, particularly in regions where tensions may be escalating.

The test launch of a nuclear-capable submarine-launched ICBM by China has been viewed as a significant development in Beijing’s military capabilities. The incident has sparked renewed debate around the issue of nuclear proliferation and the need for greater international cooperation on disarmament efforts.
