A disturbing viral video circulating on social media shows apparent animal cruelty in a small town in Iraq, sparking widespread outrage and calls for action. The footage appears to depict a group of men severely beating a dog, which has been dubbed ‘Uskut ya kalb’ (the dog’s cry for help) on Iraqi social media platforms.
The incident is believed to have taken place in the town of Najaf, approximately 100 kilometers south of Iraq’s capital, Baghdad. Despite efforts to identify the culprits, local authorities have yet to make an arrest or comment on the incident.
Eyewitnesses claim that the video was filmed near a local market, where the men were reportedly trying to steal the animal. When the dog resisted, they began beating it with sticks and clubs. Many are appalled by the brutal treatment of the animal, particularly given the sensitive nature of the footage.
“We were shocked and appalled when we saw the video,” said Dr. Ali Al-Hashemi, head of the Iraqi animal welfare organization, ‘Save the Animals Iraq.’ “It is absolutely unacceptable that such cruel behavior is allowed to occur in our society. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms and demand that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
Activists and local residents are rallying behind ‘Uskut ya kalb,’ calling for greater awareness about animal welfare in Iraq. Many are using social media to raise awareness and demand change, with the hashtag JusticeForUskut garnering widespread support.
“This is a wake-up call for us all,” said prominent Iraqi journalist, Khalid Al-Jubouri. “We cannot continue to tolerate such cruel behavior in our society. We must work together to create a more compassionate and empathetic community.”
Animal welfare organizations and local authorities have been called upon to take action to protect both animals and their human caregivers. Many have pledged to work towards creating more robust animal welfare laws and to provide support for victims of animal cruelty.
As ‘Uskut ya kalb’ continues to garner national attention, residents of Najaf and beyond are reflecting on the incident and what it means for their community. The question on everyone’s mind is: what will next steps be?
