A disturbing incident at a Capitol Hill bar has left the US Congress reeling after Senator Rand Paul’s son allegedly directed anti-Semitic remarks at a fellow congressman. According to sources, William Paul, a 28-year-old son of the influential Kentucky senator, accosted Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) and engaged in a heated exchange at a bar on Tuesday night.
The altercation reportedly began when Paul took issue with a perceived slight made by Lawler against Representative Thomas Massie, a fellow Republican. Paul allegedly responded to Lawler’s comments by saying that if Massie were to lose, it would be due to “your people.” When Lawler pressed Paul for clarification, suggesting he thought Lawler was of Jewish faith, Paul replied, “Yeah, you Jews.” This exchange was witnessed by multiple observers at the bar.
After Lawler clarified his faith, stating that he is not Jewish, Paul expressed regret for his earlier statement, saying, “Oh wow, I’m so sorry for calling you a Jew.” However, the encounter did not conclude with a reconciliation, as Paul went on to express anti-Semitic views, claiming that Jewish individuals, including Lawler and his supporters, serve Israel’s interests more than those of the United States.
This episode has drawn widespread condemnation from various corners of the US Congress, with many lawmakers expressing shock and outrage over Paul’s behavior. Notus.org, a respected online news outlet, was the first to report the incident.
Representatives from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other organizations have since weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need for stronger condemnation of anti-Semitic speech and behavior in politics.
“The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is appalled by Sen. Paul’s response and the anti-Semitic stereotypes it perpetuated,” an ADL spokesperson stated in a press release. “We encourage all political leaders to speak out unequivocally against anti-Semitism and take concrete actions to prevent harassment and intimidation based on Jewish identity.”
