Apple Seeks Approval to Source Memory Chips from Blacklisted Chinese Supplier

Apple is reportedly lobbying the Trump administration to approve the sourcing of memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a Chinese chipmaker currently listed on the Pentagon’s blacklist over alleged ties to the Chinese military. According to a report by the Financial Times, the tech giant has been seeking support from US officials to allow them to continue purchasing components from the company, despite the uncertainty surrounding the latter’s status.

ChangXin Memory Technologies is not yet subject to US trade restrictions, but it is being considered for possible inclusion on the Commerce Department’s Entity List, which designates entities deemed to pose a risk to US national security or foreign policy. The inclusion of CXMT on the list would effectively bar US companies from conducting business with the Chinese company.

The report suggests that Apple’s efforts to secure approval for sourcing components from CXMT have been ongoing for several months. The lobbying campaign is believed to be led by senior executives within the company, who are seeking to maintain the supply chain relationships currently in place.

Industry insiders have long been aware of the risk posed by the US-China trade tensions to global supply chains, particularly in the tech sector. The tensions have already had far-reaching consequences, including the imposition of tariffs on goods imported into the US from China. The possible inclusion of CXMT on the Entity List would further complicate matters for companies reliant on Chinese components.

According to one analyst, the lobbying efforts by Apple are indicative of the complex challenges faced by US companies seeking to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of US-China trade relations. “US companies have long relied on China as a key source of components, but the rapidly changing regulatory environment has made it increasingly challenging to source these components while complying with US laws and regulations,” the analyst said.

Industry observers are closely watching the developments surrounding the potential inclusion of CXMT on the Entity List, and what impact this might have on the global supply chain. The ongoing lobbying efforts by Apple and other affected companies highlight the delicate balance between the need to maintain supply chain relationships and the need to comply with rapidly evolving regulatory requirements.
