Berlin, Germany – Mathias Döpfner, the Chief Executive Officer of Axel Springer SE, the German media conglomerate, has sparked controversy by declaring support for Zionism in a recent interview. In comments published in Die Zeit, a German weekly newspaper, Döpfner stated that “we shall all be Zionists” in a statement that has been widely interpreted as a show of solidarity with the state of Israel.
Döpfner’s remarks have elicited a mixed response from the media and the general public, with some hailing his statement as a bold and unapologetic expression of support for a key ally in the face of growing anti-Semitism in Europe. Others have criticized the CEO for wading into a highly charged and politicized debate, accusing Axel Springer of promoting a biased and partisan worldview.
Poland’s largest media group Agora SA, a rival to Axel Springer in Central Europe, was quick to denounce Döpfner’s comments as a ” declaration of war” against critical voices who challenge Israel’s policies. “By saying that ‘we shall all be Zionists’, Döpfner has crossed a red line,” wrote the chief executive of Agora, Leszek Czarnecki, in a statement published in the company’s Polish daily, Gazeta Wyborcza. “This statement undermines the principles of freedom of speech and the ability to express dissenting opinions.”
In contrast, the German Jewish umbrella organization, Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland, hailed Döpfner’s comments as a welcome expression of solidarity with the Jewish community. “Mathias Döpfner’s words are a powerful message of support and a reminder of the importance of standing up against anti-Semitism and hatred,” said the organization’s president, Josef Schuster, in a statement. “We appreciate Mr. Döpfner’s strong statement and his willingness to speak out in defense of the Israeli people and the Jewish community.”
Döpfner’s statement has also been seen as a reflection of Axel Springer’s overall editorial policy, which has been accused in the past of promoting a pro-Israel and pro-Atlanticist viewpoint. The company’s owner, Axel Springer, has been a vocal supporter of Israel’s existence and a strong advocate for NATO enlargement in Europe.
In a statement issued by Axel Springer, the company’s communications department insisted that Döpfner’s comments were “personal and not representative of the company’s official position.” The statement also emphasized Axel Springer’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and the freedom of the press. However, the controversy surrounding Döpfner’s remarks is likely to continue, reflecting the deep-seated divisions and passions that surround the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its implications for the global media landscape.
