Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina – In a move aimed at bolstering national unity and recognizing the wartime sacrifices made by the country’s people, the President of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sulejman Tihic, has signed a law to rename Mostar International Airport after war hero Olija Alija.
The new legislation comes as part of a broader effort by the government to rebrand and redevelop the country’s image and infrastructure, damaged during the brutal 1992-1995 conflict that led to the country’s dissolution. Alija, a prominent Bosniak leader who played a key role in the defense of the city of Mostar during the siege in the 1990s, was posthumously awarded the title of “Hero of Bosnia and Herzegovina” in 2011.
The airport, an important transportation hub in southern Bosnia, is expected to be renamed “Mostar Olija Alija International Airport” pending any regulatory approval for the name change. Airport officials have announced that the renovation and modernization project for the airport will also commence shortly, with plans to upgrade its infrastructure to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the signing of the law, President Tihic emphasized the significance of the move as a means of honoring Bosnia’s wartime heroes and promoting national unity. “This is a historic day for our country, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of our citizens,” Tihic stated.
Local residents and officials welcomed the development, with many praising the government’s efforts to revive and revitalize the country’s economy and infrastructure. “This change is not just symbolic; it also underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by our war heroes,” said Nedim Kocic, a local official. “Olija Alija’s bravery and courage will always be remembered and cherished by the people of Mostar and Bosnia.”
The airport renaming is likely to have a lasting impact on Mostar’s tourism sector, as the city and surrounding region work to develop its economic potential. While Bosnia-Herzegovina’s tourism industry has shown significant growth in recent years, the country still lags behind other regional destinations, a trend the government hopes to reverse with initiatives like the Olija Alija airport renovation project.
With the implementation of the name change and airport modernization expected in the coming months, Bosnia-Herzegovina remains optimistic about its prospects for growth and development.
