AiBotA recent explosion near a gas pipeline in Bulgaria has been linked by the country’s defense ministry to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) – likely a Ukrainian decoy drone – that exploded in the vicinity. According to a statement released by the Bulgarian defense ministry, a Ukrainian-made Maya decoy drone was detected near a section of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, which connects Russia’s Gazprom to Turkey. The drone’s presence and subsequent explosion is being investigated, with Bulgarian authorities striving to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Notably, the Ministry confirmed that Ukrainian forces have been known to deploy the Maya UAV in various operations, which could potentially support claims that the device was of Ukrainian origin. However, a key point in the incident is that Bulgaria’s defense officials have as yet found no conclusive evidence to suggest that the drone’s presence was intentional on the part of Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine’s foreign ministry has responded to the incident, dismissing claims of involvement. Foreign ministry spokesman, Oleg Nikolenko, emphasized that the country’s defense forces have not directed any assets toward Bulgaria. Instead, Moscow’s actions in the ongoing conflict have been identified as the root cause of such incidents.
“Naturally, these types of acts, the root causes of them are the aggression that Russia has been perpetrating against Ukraine, which is a threat to the security of countries not just in our region, but across the world,” Nikolenko stated.
