Chaldean Catholic Church Elects Archdiocese of Mosul’s Architect as Next Leader

In a historic move, the Chaldean Catholic Church has elected Archbishop Emil Nona as its new patriarch, choosing the name Mar Paul Nona III. This development follows the recent resignation of Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, who had been serving as the church’s leader.

Archbishop Nona, aged 58, has a distinguished track record in his ecclesiastical career. Prior to the 2014 rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, he held the position of leader of the Chaldean Archdiocese of Mosul. The diocese bore the brunt of the conflict and its community suffered significantly due to sectarian violence and forced displacement. Despite these challenges, Archbishop Nona’s leadership during that tumultuous period was characterized by calmness and determination.

After the rise of ISIS, Archbishop Nona relocated to Australia, where he took on the role of head of the Chaldean diocese of Sydney. During his tenure, he actively sought to rebuild relationships between the church and its diasporic communities. His efforts aimed at integrating the displaced population into society while preserving their unique cultural and faith-based heritage.

His election as the new patriarch comes at a time when the Chaldean Catholic Church is confronting an uncertain future amidst ongoing regional conflicts and shifting political landscapes. As the leader of over one million adherents worldwide, Archbishop Nona will face significant challenges, including ensuring the protection and preservation of vulnerable Christian communities, addressing internal church concerns, and fostering collaboration with other Christian denominations.

In a statement released by the Vatican on the occasion of Archbishop Nona’s election, the Bishop of Rome commended the Archbishop on his new appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the church during ‘these transformative times’. The appointment marks a new beginning for the Chaldean Catholic Church and will undoubtedly lead to significant changes in its governance structure, community outreach, and theological direction.

Archbishop Emil Nona’s ascendancy to the position of patriarch will be formally recognized through his episcopal consecration, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks. In a message to the clergy and the faithful, Archbishop Nona urged unity and expressed confidence in the resilience and courage of the Chaldean people amidst the trials they face. His message echoed a renewed commitment to peace, justice, and spiritual growth for the church and its adherents globally.
