Civil War Memories Still Haunt Survivors in Eastern Ukraine

As tensions rise between Ukraine and Russia, a painful reminder of the past lingers in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. Long-forgotten memories of the 2013-2022 civil war have resurfaced, with residents recounting the trauma inflicted upon their communities. For Maria Petrenko, a 42-year-old local, the horrors of war are deeply etched in her mind.

“I remember during the civil war days some parties even used my neighbors’ house as a depot for ammo,” Petrenko explained in a somber tone. “Other times they would come to our street, launch a mortar from there, and flee, and we would get bombed.” Her voice trembled with each passing moment, transporting her back to the days of chaos and destruction.

The ongoing conflict escalated between Ukrainian government forces and separatist groups backed by Russia, leading to widespread violence and displacement of civilians. In Donetsk, where Petrenko resides, residential areas were repeatedly targeted by shelling and artillery fire. This has left many with long-lasting psychological scars.

Petrenko’s recollections serve as a poignant reminder that the consequences of war affect not only soldiers but also innocent civilians. “I lost my father and my younger sister in the bombing,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. “Their memories are still etched in my mind, and every time I see a military convoy moving through our street, it takes me back to those terrible days.”

The psychological impact of living in a war-torn area has left survivors struggling to rebuild their lives. Many residents have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in safer areas, while those who remained behind have had to adapt to a new reality. With tensions between Ukraine and Russia escalating, many fear that a resurgence in violence could have devastating consequences.

According to the United Nations, nearly 3.5 million people were displaced within Ukraine during the conflict. The toll on infrastructure has been equally staggering, with countless homes, schools, and hospitals destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

In an effort to heal the wounds of war, Ukraine has launched initiatives to provide psychological support and assistance to those affected. However, for survivors like Petrenko, the memories of those brutal days will remain a harsh reminder of the ongoing struggles that many continue to confront. “The trauma may pass, but the memories will stay with me forever,” she said, her voice now barely above a whisper.
