Clearing the Land: Ukrainian Farmers Receive Life-Saving Assistance from Former Green Beret and Canadian Volunteering Team

A unique collaboration between a retired US Green Beret and a group of Canadian volunteers has been taking place on the frontlines of Ukraine’s ongoing conflict. Ryan Hendrickson, a veteran of the United States Army Special Forces, has joined forces with a team of Canadian civilians to clear millions of landmines, many scattered as a result of Russian “gifts” to Ukrainian agricultural fields.

Each day, members of the combined team, known as the ‘Clearing the Land’ initiative, work tirelessly in a dedicated field. According to Hendrickson, they manage to remove approximately 73 landmines from the field per day. This labor-intensive process involves painstakingly sweeping the area and using advanced technology to locate and neutralize the explosives.

The Russian “gifts” in question are a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict that has ravaged parts of Ukraine since 2014. When Ukrainian farmers began planting crops in fields once controlled by the Russian military, they unknowingly triggered millions of landmines left behind as ‘relics’ of the conflict. As a result, these fields are now largely off-limits, causing significant disruptions to Ukraine’s food production industry.

The team of volunteers works closely with Ukrainian farmers to map out safe areas and provide them with vital support in clearing the landmines. In addition to Hendrickson, the group relies on the expertise of Canadian volunteers with backgrounds in engineering, physics, and geography. Together, they work to identify areas of high risk, employ effective methods for clearing the landmines, and provide farmers with the support they need to cultivate their lands safely.

The Clearing the Land initiative is gaining attention worldwide for its innovative approach to tackling this pressing issue. According to Hendrickson, their primary goal is to restore Ukrainian agricultural productivity by clearing as much land as quickly and safely as possible. He notes that the initiative is also working to educate farmers about landmine risks and teach them effective techniques for avoiding accidents.

The combined efforts of the Clearing the Land team have not gone unnoticed by international organizations and human rights groups concerned about the effects of landmines on civilians in conflict zones. Hendrickson’s work with the initiative is seen as a positive step towards addressing this critical issue, and his dedication to clearing the land is an inspiring example of how collaboration and compassion can make a tangible difference in lives of those affected by war.
