BOGOTA, COLOMBIA – Colombia’s military and law enforcement agencies launched a joint operation in the eastern province of Norte de Santander, targeting the mainstay of the National Liberation Army (ELN), the country’s largest guerrilla group. On Tuesday, in the town of TibĂș, near the border with Venezuela, Colombian forces carried out a precision assault on ELN command centers and strongholds in the strategic Catatumbo region. The region, also known as Catatumbo, has historically been an ELN stronghold due to its geographical location which facilitates the movement of people and goods across the Venezuelan border.
According to reports from the Colombian Ministry of Defense, the operation successfully dismantled a critical ELN unit entrusted with shielding and escorting top commanders through Catatumbo River cross-border corridors. The tactical operation, involving combined aerial and ground support, resulted in at least seven suspected ELN fighters killed. Furthermore, government forces destroyed two entrenched ELN camps, seized a substantial stockpile of materials, and confiscated explosive-laden drones intended for use in future attacks.
Among the seized materials and equipment, were explosives and production components, used to craft highly lethal antipersonnel landmines. These findings highlight the ELN’s persistent reliance on violent tactics and strategies that often inflict untold humanitarian damage and disrupt civilian life in the region. The recent operation underscores the ongoing efforts by the Colombian government to dismantle ELN operations within its territory, in conjunction with regional security strategies.
The joint operation, involving military and law enforcement agencies, marked the most recent phase of a larger campaign, aimed at degrading and dismantling ELN structures operating across the Catatumbo region. Since beginning the assault, Colombian forces have made significant strides in curtailing the ELN’s capacity for armed incursions and subversive activities. Colombian military authorities have acknowledged that the success of this operation would have an enduring impact on the security environment in the region.
In a related development, the Colombian Ministry of Defense stated that the operation was carried out in collaboration with U.S. military personnel stationed in Colombia. Military sources revealed that intelligence provided by the allies was instrumental in pinpointing ELN positions and facilitating an efficient and effective operation. Military officials expressed confidence that the latest strike marks an essential milestone in Colombia’s efforts to combat transnational crime and counter the continued threat posed by armed groups.
The military operation has been met with an outpouring of support from local residents who have expressed concerns about the persistent threat posed by the ELN. Local communities have been impacted severely by the ongoing conflict and have called for more robust security measures to protect their livelihoods.
