Amritsar, Punjab – In an unprecedented move that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab has launched a novel initiative to provide free pizzas to the needy in the form of a “Pizza Langar.” This innovative endeavor has taken the traditional concept of langar, where hot, nutritious meals are served to all regardless of caste, creed, or social status, to the next level.
The brainchild of Gurpreet Singh, a local restaurateur, the Pizza Langar initiative was conceptualized as a way to provide a much-needed respite to the homeless, migrant workers, and daily wage earners who struggle to make ends meet in the holy city. What began as a modest effort has rapidly gained momentum, with the project witnessing an average of 500 people being served pizzas every day.
“We wanted to give back to the community and provide something that would not only nourish the body but also bring a smile to people’s faces,” said Singh, the mastermind behind this project. Under his guidance, a team of volunteers, including local residents and Sikh organizations, have been working tirelessly to prepare and serve pizzas from 7 a.m. till 7 p.m.
The pizzas, carefully crafted with locally sourced ingredients, are served with a side of chaatni (a tangy yogurt-based side dish) and a refreshing glass of water. What sets the Pizza Langar apart is its adherence to traditional gurudwara norms, with the entire endeavor being driven by a spirit of selfless service and devotion.
The response to the Pizza Langar has been overwhelming, with visitors from far and wide stopping by to sample the delicious offerings. According to Dr. Harish Kumar, a medical professional who was present at the Gurdwara, the Pizza Langar has become a beacons of hope for those struggling on the streets. “This initiative has not only provided a much-needed respite to our clients but has also helped raise awareness about the importance of community service and volunteerism,” he said.
As the Pizza Langar gains momentum, it has also sparked a renewed sense of community spirit in Amritsar, with local businesses and residents coming forward to offer support and donate resources. The future looks bright for this innovative initiative, which is not only revolutionizing the concept of langar but also setting a new benchmark for community service.
