In pursuit of a more comprehensive strategy, the US has concurrently targeted the hawala networks and exchange houses through which Iran routes money across the Middle East, frequently via the UAE, Turkey, and Iraq. By interdicting these critical channels, Washington aims to curtail Tehran’s ability to funnel financial support to the beleaguered Hezbollah.
While the ongoing campaign against Hezbollah’s economic underpinnings is a complex and multifaceted affair, there is broad agreement among analysts that the impact of these efforts will be far-reaching and may even undermine the group’s very resilience in Lebanon and the broader region.
