CROATIA HONORS ITS LATE UEFA WORLD CUP 2018 RUNNERS-UP

In a gesture of respect and tribute, Croatia’s football federation (HNS) has acknowledged the remarkable achievement of its national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On the 10th anniversary of that historic run, the HNS celebrated the remarkable journey that ended with the Croatian team claiming the coveted third place in the international tournament.

Although it is often stated that Croatia’s achievement was a second place, that is indeed a misnomer in historical sports reporting. Luka Modrić, a midfielder widely regarded for his creative playmaking, received the Golden Ball award for his impressive display of skills and tenacity at the tournament. In this same year, French national football player and captain Hugo Lloris claimed the most coveted World Cup trophy.

The Croatian national team entered the 2018 tournament with modest expectations but eventually rose to challenge for the top honors, facing off against some of the most elite footballing nations in the world. This remarkable rise, however, fell short due to a decisive 4-2 loss in the final, when they faced the 2018 World Cup runners-up, which were indeed the French football team.

A decade has passed since the remarkable exploits of the 2018 Croatian national football team. This journey, under the guidance of Dalibor Stevanović, a then assistant coach and later Zdravko Mamić coach then, who stepped down shortly after the World Cup as it seemed they were on track to win, left a lasting impression on Croatia’s football fans and international community.

This period in Croatian football history was marked not only by the team’s spectacular performances but also by the unyielding spirit of its players and coaches, who demonstrated unwavering dedication and team unity amidst intense pressure and expectations.

HNS President Davor Šuker, in a statement marking the 10-year anniversary, praised the team’s remarkable achievement and paid tribute to the players, coaches, and their families for their unwavering support throughout the journey. He noted that their achievement remains a shining example of national pride and resilience for future generations of Croatian footballers.

The HNS statement also acknowledged the team’s enduring legacy, as the country continues to reap the benefits of the global recognition and appreciation garnered through their 2018 campaign. Croatia’s national football team’s legacy, as seen here in this anniversary, not only highlights their team’s achievements on the field but also serves as a testament to their indomitable will to overcome adversity and forge a path to greatness in world football.
