DANISH PM DEFENDS GREENLAND’S SOVEREIGNTY AT NATO SUMMIT

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – In a strong stance against any potential threats to its Nordic territory, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly reiterated her country’s position on Greenland’s sovereignty during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

The issue came under close scrutiny following reports of Denmark and the United States’ alleged discussions over Greenland, with some claiming the two nations might be negotiating a deal that would have Denmark sell the autonomous territory to the US.

Responding to these claims, Prime Minister Frederiksen made it clear that such reports were unfounded. “Greenland is, of course, not for sale,” she said. Her statement underscored the Danish government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining Greenland’s autonomy and protecting its territorial integrity.

During a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the NATO summit, Ms. Frederiksen stated that Denmark is a “sovereign state” and urged all allies to respect Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. Her stance emphasizes the significance of respecting and preserving regional autonomy.

Denmark’s defense of Greenland’s sovereignty is seen as pivotal given the strategic location of the autonomous territory in the North Atlantic, which plays a significant role in regional security. Greenland holds immense natural resources, including its vast reserves of oil, gas, and rare earth minerals, making it a vital component in the global geopolitical landscape.

Furthermore, Denmark’s stance on Greenland aligns with the territory’s own aspirations for greater autonomy and self-governance. Greenlandic leaders have been negotiating greater control over foreign policy since the country transitioned to a self-governing territory in 1979.

Prime Minister Frederiksen’s statements were seen as an official warning to countries with strategic interests in Greenland against any attempts to undermine its sovereignty. Denmark’s defense of Greenland is likely an attempt to address the US’s recent increased interest in the region due to the country’s growing focus on Arctic security.

Greenlandic authorities have welcomed Denmark’s stance on protecting their regional autonomy. “The Danish government’s statement is very clear that Greenland is not for sale, and that our people’s self-determination is respected,” said Greenland Premier Vittus Qujaukitsoq. “We’re grateful for the support shown towards our cause by the Danish government,” he added.

The international community’s reaction to Denmark’s stance is expected to be closely watched, particularly with regards to the US’s intentions towards Greenland.
