“Denmark and Greenland Affirm Sovereignty Amid Tensions with the US”

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – In a firm statement against US involvement in Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently visited Ankara, Turkey, reiterating Denmark’s stance on the self-governance and sovereignty of the Arctic territory.

In a press conference following her meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Frederiksen made it clear that Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory with a special status, will not be subject to foreign control. Her remarks come as a response to reports of US involvement in potential Greenlandic projects, raising concerns over the nation’s territorial integrity.

“Greenland is, of course, not for sale,” Frederiksen stated firmly. “We hope that all allies will respect the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.” In a subsequent statement, Danish officials highlighted the significance of maintaining Greenland’s sovereignty, citing the importance of respect for territorial integrity as an essential component of international relations.

Recent US endeavors have been viewed with skepticism by Danish authorities. The potential involvement in Greenlandic infrastructure projects, which reportedly includes a US-funded airport in Nuuk, has been criticized for disregarding local priorities and undermining Greenlandic decision-making processes. Critics argue that the projects undermine the Danish government’s ability to make strategic decisions for the territory, thus threatening Greenland’s sovereignty.

Denmark has been actively working to assert Greenland’s self-governance, having implemented a constitutional change in 2019 that solidified Greenland’s status as a domestic territory with greater autonomy in domestic affairs while maintaining Denmark’s responsibility for foreign and security policy.

In response to US actions, Frederiksen sought to reassure Danish allies of her administration’s resolve to protect Greenland’s rights to self-governance. Her Turkish counterpart, President Erdogan, expressed solidarity with Denmark’s stance, emphasizing the importance of respecting national sovereignty in international relations.

The tense situation highlights the complex dynamic between the US, Denmark, and Greenland as global superpowers seek to leverage strategic assets in the region. It remains to be seen whether these recent statements will lead to changes in US policy toward Greenland or bolster Danish efforts to solidify Greenland’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Greenlandic parliament, Inatsisartut, has expressed its gratitude for Denmark’s stance and called for the continued preservation of Greenland’s self-governance and autonomy. In a press statement, Inatsisartut representatives emphasized the critical significance of defending Greenland’s sovereignty against any perceived threats to the nation’s rights to self-determination.
