BEIRUT, LEBANON – In a worrying escalation of aerial activity in the region, two drone strikes were reported in the Haboush district of Tyre, southern Lebanon, on Thursday. According to sources close to the matter, the incidents occurred at around 2:00 AM local time, with explosions and gunfire audible in the area for several minutes following the strikes.
The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) confirmed the incident, citing eyewitness reports. The Haboush district, a densely populated residential area, reportedly experienced significant damage. Details on the extent of the casualties and material damage were not immediately available.
Local residents were seen fleeing the area as a result of the strikes, adding to the chaos. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of panic as emergency services rushed to attend to the wounded. Lebanon’s military has been put on high alert following the incident.
Reports suggest that Israel is suspected of being behind the drone strikes, with the country being a prime suspect in such incidents in Lebanon. However, at this stage, there has been no official confirmation of this from either Israel or Lebanon.
The international community has expressed concern over the increased tensions between the two nations. Lebanese politicians have also condemned the incidents, stating that they undermine efforts towards maintaining stability in the region.
The recent escalation comes in the backdrop of ongoing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel over the disputed maritime borders. Lebanon sees the recent strikes as a direct provocation that undermines the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“This is an affront to our sovereignty, and we will not stand idly by,” a government official stated on condition of anonymity. “The international community needs to take a more active stance on our behalf if Lebanon is to protect its citizens from aerial aggression.”
The incident marks another flashpoint in a protracted conflict between Lebanon and Israel, with periodic instances of aerial incursions over the past few years causing unease for citizens in both countries.
