DSA Seeks to Extend Momentum into Swing States with Key Primary Battles

In the wake of major primary victories in Colorado and New York, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is shifting its focus towards two crucial swing states – Michigan and Wisconsin. In a bid to prove its capability to win competitive statewide races, the DSA is allocating its resources, staff, and star surrogates towards these battleground states.

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, is locked in a closely contested Democratic primary for Michigan Senate, while the DSA is also backing Francesca Hong in her primary bid for Wisconsin governor. Both El-Sayed and Hong are planning to host a series of rallies ahead of their primaries, with the campaigns and DSA organizers discussing the possibility of inviting some of the movement’s most prominent figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has recently endorsed El-Sayed.

Emma Vigeland, co-host of the progressive program The Majority Report, believes that the DSA’s summer momentum could be sustained if the movement can continue to rack up wins. “It’s DSA summer. We can’t stop racking up wins,” she stated. “We’re seeing the culmination of 10 years of democratic socialism becoming more mainstream.”

With the upcoming primary elections in Michigan and Wisconsin set to take place in August, the DSA and the insurgent left are working to harness the necessary infrastructure to extend their wins into the battlegrounds. Popular Twitch streamer Hasan Piker and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) are already planning to hit the campaign trail to boost DSA-backed candidates in these pivotal states.

According to national DSA co-chair Megan Romer, membership has surged, with over 7,500 new members signing up nationally since the group’s sweeping victories in New York. The DSA held a national members call earlier this week, featuring two of its newest stars – Pennsylvania congressional nominee Rep. Chris Rabb and Melat Kiros, who recently secured a major primary upset in Colorado.

The call also addressed Speaker Mike Johnson’s recent attacks on the group and emphasized the importance of channeling organic excitement into movement growth. Romer stated, “One of the biggest challenges of organizing is helping people channel their organic excitement – positive or negative – into movement growth. We’ve built these structures and now we get to help people find their way into them so they can use them to win what they want.”

As the primary season heats up, the DSA remains committed to extending its momentum into the swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin. With its star surrogates and resources focused on these battlegrounds, the movement is poised to make its mark on the country’s electoral landscape.

This development comes as the DSA continues to experience rapid growth and increasing relevance within the Democratic Party. As the August primary elections approach, all eyes will be on the DSA’s prospects in Michigan and Wisconsin, where the movement’s ability to win competitive statewide races will be put to the test.
