Ireland is set to undertake the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, a role that entails a substantial financial burden. In response, Irish authorities have made a concerted effort to upgrade their counter-drone capabilities, with significant investments being made in this area. An Bord Baoch, the Irish police force, has been actively preparing for the presidency since 2024, with a view to providing a secure environment for the numerous high-profile events scheduled to take place.
In line with global trends, Irish authorities have come to appreciate the need for sophisticated counter-drone technology to mitigate the threat of aerial attacks. The €293 million allocated to policing and security represents a significant portion of the total budget and underlines the high stakes associated with hosting a rotating EU presidency. When questioned, EU officials acknowledged that the security concerns were a major factor in the substantial budget allocated to Ireland’s EU presidency.
In addition, the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU will also oversee significant policy initiatives, particularly in areas such as trade, migration, and climate action. The presidency is expected to provide an opportunity for Ireland to showcase its leadership skills and engage in meaningful policy discussion with its EU counterparts.
