In a move seen as a demonstration of support for the United States, a New England-based retailer has announced plans to lower gas prices at 25 locations across the Philadelphia metropolitan area, just days before the country celebrates its 250th anniversary.
President Donald Trump, in a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, praised the retailer for taking the lead in reducing gas prices. “Just as I promised, Oil Prices are plummeting FAST, and Gas Prices at the pump are dropping too, but not as fast as they should be,” he wrote, citing the ongoing decline in oil prices.
As part of its initiative, the retailer, which operates under the Freedom Fuel Network brand, will cut gas prices at its stations across the Greater Philadelphia Area starting July 3rd. The move aims to give back to the community and show appreciation for the residents of the region, particularly those living in the City of Philadelphia, which will be among the main celebrants of the United States’ Bicentennial milestone.
“We are proud to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Birthplace of our very special, one-of-a-kind Declaration of Independence,” Trump continued, highlighting the significance of Pennsylvania in American history.
Trump, who won the presidential election in the state in 2016, expressed his admiration for the retailer’s patriotism and urged other businesses to follow suit. “They are doing this because they love the U.S.A. They are leading the way. Others should follow,” he said.
While oil prices have indeed plummeted recently, gas prices at the pump have been slower to respond. The ongoing decline in crude oil prices has been attributed in part to geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the recent decision to lift some of the U.S. sanctions on Iran. Trump referenced this development, stating that gas prices will soon return to the low levels Americans experienced before the U.S. military intervention in the region.
The 4th of July celebrations are set to kick off on July 3rd, and the region is bracing for an influx of tourists and visitors. The retailer’s move to lower gas prices is seen as a welcome gesture to those visiting the area and will likely be seen as a boost to local businesses and the overall economy.
It is unclear whether other retailers will follow in Freedom Fuel Network’s footsteps, but for now, residents of the Philadelphia area will be the beneficiaries of this initiative.
