“Emojipedia Creator Takes Credit for Birth of Iconic ‘Sure’ GIF in 2023 Study”

In a revealing study published last week, Emojipedia creator Jeremy Burge revealed new insights into the origins of a ubiquitous internet meme: the “Sure” GIF. This innocuous yet popular expression has become an indispensable element in the global lexicon of online communication, and its development is now widely attributed to Burge’s creation of Emojipedia in 2013.

Launched as a comprehensive catalog of emojis, Emojipedia gradually evolved into a go-to resource for the most obscure and niche elements in internet jargon, including memes. According to an interview published in the journal of Digital Culture, Burge recalled that it wasn’t until the end of 2019 that someone requested the addition of a “sure” GIF to the Emojipedia database.

“Someone was asking for a ‘sure’ face emoji,” Burge recounted during the interview. “At the time, Emojipedia didn’t have an official ‘sure’ entry, because nobody had ever requested one before. I decided to put together a GIF from the available sources, which we now see as the standard ‘sure’ reaction in digital communication.”

Burge added that it took him several years to refine the “sure” GIF due to his busy professional schedule and the complexities of navigating online copyright laws. “Creating GIFs is one of the most underappreciated components of our job at Emojipedia,” Burge emphasized. “Finding a perfect GIF that accurately conveys a specific emotion within digital culture takes an incredible amount of effort.”

Despite Burge’s pivotal role in the creation and dissemination of the “sure” GIF, the meme gained massive traction on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok in 2022, long after its initial development. According to data compiled by Twitter, instances of the GIF were used over 1.5 million times within the first two quarters of 2022.

“By leveraging the ‘sure’ GIF as a versatile, widely-adopted meme, we saw an increase in online engagement across various platforms,” a Twitter spokesperson noted. “GIFs can serve as a powerful tool in bridging cultural gaps between communities and languages.”

Burge’s study has far-reaching implications for internet linguists and digital communication experts, underscoring the ever-changing dynamics of the internet language landscape. The ‘Sure’ GIF, once a niche internet phenomenon, has become a testament to the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of digital communication.
