In a recent statement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signaled his country’s resolute commitment to acquiring the advanced F-35 next-generation stealth fighter jet, despite ongoing trade tensions and sanctions imposed by the United States.
During a press briefing, Erdoğan expressed confidence in Turkey’s ability to overcome the obstacles standing in the way of securing the highly sought-after F-35 aircraft. “We will continue to pursue this goal,” he stated. “Keep following us.”
The US government expelled Turkey from the F-35 program in 2019 following the country’s decision to purchase the Russian S-400 missile defense system. The US views the S-400 as a significant risk to the security of its F-35 fighter jets, as it could potentially intercept radar signals emitted by the aircraft.
This move, coupled with other tensions in the US-Turkey relationship, resulted in the imposition of economic sanctions on Turkey. However, Erdoğan’s assertion of intent to acquire the F-35 suggests that he remains committed to overcoming these challenges.
Despite this, Turkey’s ability to pursue the F-35 appears to be increasingly compromised. As of 2023, it is unclear whether Turkey will be able to acquire F-35s from any country, including used jets or components that might be reassembled.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Air Force has been forced to operate with aging F-16 fighter jets. An upgrade of these aircraft is in the works; however, this program is expected to be several years from completing.
The Turkish government has also expressed interest in acquiring alternative fighter jets, such as the Russian Su-35 and the French Rafale. However, a full transition from the F-16 to a new aircraft would require significant funding and logistical support, which is likely to be difficult for the Turkish military to manage.
Erdoğan’s determination to pursue the F-35 despite these challenges has sparked speculation about potential diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute with the US. If successful, Turkey’s F-35 aspirations would likely be met with a mixed response from the US, with some welcoming the resolution of tensions and others arguing that concessions would undermine security interests.
In the absence of further progress, the pursuit of the F-35 by Turkey appears to be all but stalled, leaving Erdoğan’s statement as the latest chapter in an ongoing saga that has captivated the international community.
