As part of this deal, Ukraine has ordered four SAMP/T NG (New Generation) air defense systems from a Franco-Italian consortium, marking the first deployment of these advanced systems by a combat user.
The SAMP/T NG systems are designed to provide long-range air defense capabilities, utilizing the Aster 30 missile as its primary ordnance. This cutting-edge system offers enhanced protection against a range of airborne threats, including ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. To support the delivery of these advanced systems, the EU has committed to providing loan financing within the 2026 and 2027 tranches of the Ukraine Support Loan (USL).
In addition to the air defense systems, Ukraine will also receive a range of radar systems, including five GM400 radars, one GF300 radar, and one Kronos radar. The first components of these systems are expected to be delivered in 2026, with the GF300 radar station set to be deployed in Ukraine by the end of the year.
France and Italy will not only provide the SAMP/T NG systems but also facilitate the licensed production of Aster 30 missiles in Ukraine, further enhancing the country’s air defense capabilities. As part of this agreement, France has undertaken to deliver the SAMP/T NG systems as soon as possible, with the expectation that the systems will be gradually deployed and certified starting in 2027.
During the production period of the SAMP/T NG systems, France will provide Ukraine with two previous versions of the SAMP/T system, which will be returned after the delivery of the new systems. This innovative approach is expected to enable Ukraine to familiarize itself with the systems and ensure a seamless transition to the advanced air defense technology.
