Washington D.C. – In a bold move to address its staffing shortages, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has turned to the gaming community to identify and recruit highly skilled individuals to serve as air traffic controllers. By targeting key skills honed through gaming, such as multitasking, quick decision-making, and problem-solving, the agency aimed to tap into a reservoir of talent that has gone largely untapped until now.
According to FAA officials, a successful recruitment campaign launched in April has yielded impressive results, with over 2,000 gamers already hired as air traffic controllers, representing 94% of the agency’s hiring goal for this phase. The agency has also identified more than 2,000 additional candidates in the pipeline, who are in various stages of the selection and training process.
“We realized that the skills required to excel in video games, such as quick thinking, multitasking, and adaptability, are strikingly similar to those needed to excel as an air traffic controller,” said an FAA spokesperson. “It was only natural for us to explore this unique talent pool as a source of new recruits.”
Gaming enthusiasts with experience in high-pressure, fast-paced games such as first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and flight simulator games proved to be highly attractive candidates. FAA officials praised the applicants’ ability to handle complex information, think critically under pressure, and make rapid, high-stakes decisions.
The agency implemented a multi-step process to select and train the new recruits, with a focus on identifying candidates who could effectively apply their gaming skills to the demands of air traffic control. Successful applicants underwent extensive background checks, cognitive assessments, and simulator training to gauge their capacity to handle the high-stress responsibilities of the job.
Air traffic controllers play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft through the nation’s skies. With an increasing demand for air travel, the FAA aims to bolster its workforce by an additional 1,000 air traffic controllers to support the growing number of passengers and air cargo shipments.
