Despite lingering concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, a recent family reunion in a small New England town saw family members and friends from across the country gather together for a much-needed reunion. In a conversation with one of the attendees, Jane Wilson, it became apparent that even though there were worries regarding health risks, no one was more eager to catch up and reconnect than her own family.
“We had a good time,” Jane Wilson said, reminiscing about her family’s reunion. According to Wilson, who was the youngest child in her family to be present at the reunion, the sense of camaraderie among her relatives had never been more evident.
When asked how attendees felt when initially deciding whether to attend the reunion, Wilson responded by saying it was a mixed bag for many. However, in her words – and those of several other attendees, ‘the desire to reconnect with each other outweighed every concern we had.’ This perspective resonated throughout her family, making it easier for the reunion planners to coordinate and execute their plans.
To minimize the risk posed by the pandemic, the reunion took the form of an outdoor gathering. Organizers had ensured that attendees would have ample space and adhere to the town’s public guidelines at the time. The family reunion was set against the backdrop of rolling hills and picturesque countryside.
According to Jane Wilson, attendees made use of the beautiful scenery to take part in group activities, reminisce about family history, and share their individual experiences during the pandemic. ‘It was refreshing to be around my family,’ Jane stated.
Some of the activities planned for the reunion included family-style meals, outdoor picnics, and games of croquet and badminton. Organized outings included a guided nature walk and an informal family photography session. For many, the reunion became an opportunity to bridge the gaps created during the long months of isolation.
Jane Wilson and her family felt that despite the lingering concerns over COVID-19 and its ongoing risks, the family reunion demonstrated that even in uncertain times, the bonds between loved ones could continue to grow and flourish.
