Jerusalem, Israel – A former Israeli spy has sounded the alarm on potential security threats emanating from Turkey and Egypt, advising the Israeli government to prepare for possible future confrontations with these two Middle Eastern nations.
Jonathan Pollard, who served as a US-based Israeli intelligence operative in the 1980s and was released from prison in 2015, made the remarks during an interview with Middle East Eye. In his assessment, Pollard emphasized that both Turkey and Egypt could pose significant security risks to Israel, following the current conflict with Iran.
“Israel needs to be aware of the developments in the region and be prepared for the possibility of conflict with Turkey and Egypt,” Pollard stated. “These countries have traditionally been allies of Israel, but in recent years they have been drifting away.”
Pollard specifically highlighted Turkey’s growing influence in southern Syria as a major area of concern. According to the former spy, Turkey’s military presence in the region has the potential to destabilize the region and ultimately pose a threat to Israel. Furthermore, he suggested that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s aggressive foreign policy and expanding regional influence could lead to conflict with Israel.
The former Israeli operative also expressed concerns about Egypt’s role in regional affairs. Pollard believes that Egypt’s military intervention in Libya and its attempts to expand its influence in the region could ultimately lead to a direct confrontation with Israel.
Pollard’s warnings come as regional tensions continue to rise and Israeli policymakers grapple with the complexities of the Middle East. Debate within Israel over future security threats and strategies for addressing them has been ongoing for some time.
The Israeli government has traditionally maintained close ties with Turkey and Egypt. However, relations have deteriorated in recent years, particularly following Turkey’s incursion into northern Syria and Egypt’s support for Palestinian Islamist groups in Gaza.
While Pollard’s remarks do not reflect official Israeli government policy, his comments highlight the complexity of regional dynamics and the need for Israeli policymakers to be vigilant in the face of emerging security threats.
Israeli officials have so far remained tight-lipped on the matter, but the former spy’s warnings will undoubtedly add fuel to ongoing debates about Israel’s security strategies in the Middle East.
