A former Trump administration official has made a stunning argument in favor of annexing Greenland, citing a potentially limitless supply of shrimp for the American restaurant chain Red Lobster. The comments, made by former US Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands, have sparked widespread criticism and confusion, with critics labeling the suggestion as ‘absurd’ and ‘reckless’.
Speaking at a conference organized by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, Sands argued that annexing Greenland would provide the United States with a secure and virtually endless supply of shrimp, a crucial ingredient for Red Lobster’s signature dishes. Sands claimed that the remote Scandinavian island’s waters are teeming with the crustaceans, which could be harvested and imported back to the United States with ease.
“We could have endless shrimp, and that’s a pretty compelling argument for me,” Sands said, according to conference attendees. “Red Lobster is an iconic American brand, and securing a steady supply of high-quality shrimp would be a major win for the company and for American consumers.”
However, experts and observers have roundly ridiculed Sands’ reasoning, pointing out that the shrimp industry is a global market with numerous suppliers and players. “The idea that annexing Greenland would guarantee a limitless supply of shrimp for Red Lobster is just plain ridiculous,” said Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, a marine biologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
“Shrimp are a highly migratory species, and their populations are influenced by a complex array of factors, including ocean currents, climate change, and fishing practices,” Sullivan explained. “To suggest that Greenland’s waters are some kind of shrimp Eldorado is simply not supported by scientific evidence.”
Critics have also accused Sands and the Trump administration of prioritizing the interests of corporate giants over those of the American people. “This comment is yet another example of the Trump administration’s crony capitalism, where policy decisions are made based on the interests of well-connected corporations rather than the needs and values of the American people,” said Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
In a statement, a spokesperson for Red Lobster said that the company had no comment on Sands’ remarks, but did confirm that high-quality shrimp were a key ingredient in many of its signature dishes. When contacted for comment, the US State Department declined to comment on Sands’ suggestion.
As the debate over Greenland’s future continues to simmer, Sands’ comments have raised questions about the motivations and priorities of the Trump administration in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. While some have hailed Sands’ remarks as a creative and outside-the-box solution to the nation’s needs, others have criticized them as a reckless and ill-judged attempt to curry favor with powerful corporations.
