Philadelphia, PA – After months of rigorous training, The Franklin Institute has proudly announced the introduction of a highly trained, purebred canine companion designed to support visitors with sensory sensitivities and anxiety. This specially bred dog is the culmination of collaboration between experts from the institution’s sensory program and a team of experienced breeders.
The unique canine, a 16-month-old female Labrador Retriever named Luna, will provide comfort and emotional support to individuals who have difficulty coping with overwhelming sensory stimuli in a museum setting. With Luna as a primary point of contact, visitors can enjoy hands-on exhibits without the pressures of sensory anxieties.
According to Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, Director of The Franklin Institute’s sensory program, this initiative not only underscores the need for accessibility but also highlights the potential benefits of utilizing trained canines in public spaces. “The partnership between researchers and breeders led to the careful selection of a breed specifically suited to assist individuals with sensory sensitivities,” she explained.
In addition to extensive training in response to various triggers, Luna has undergone comprehensive socialization to prepare her for interaction with numerous museum patrons every week. Her advanced training also encompasses skills like emotional stability in response to unpredictable situations.
Franklin Institute officials emphasized that Luna is an integral component of their commitment to inclusive accessibility and will be a valuable resource for visitors, complementing existing accommodations such as adaptable audio descriptions, tactile sign language, and quiet areas.
Luna’s role will not only be limited to direct interaction with visitors but will also serve as an ambassador, spreading awareness of sensory sensitivities and promoting understanding of such conditions within the broader community. The introduction of Luna at The Franklin Institute marks another step in creating an empathetic and welcoming environment for all patrons.
While Luna is set to debut in May 2026, The Franklin Institute’s sensory-friendly programs, including guided tours tailored for visitors with sensory needs, can be explored upon contacting the organization’s accessibility department.
