GERMANY DEFENCE INDUSTRY HITS BACK OVER MERKEL ERA COMMENT

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger caused a stir during a recent Berlin security summit when he publicly discussed his views on the state of the German defense industry under the leadership of former Chancellor Angela Merkel. In an explosive exchange, Papperger claimed that Merkel once told the German defense industry that, in essence, if their services were needed, they would be called upon to resolve any security issues, otherwise they could remain in the shadows. It was a comment made several years before Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Papperger was speaking at the recent Berlin Security Conference in which German arms manufacturers have faced immense criticism following their performance in Ukraine. His comments were initially reported by German newspaper Welt. He expressed the view that Germany’s defense and arms industry had been pushed ‘in the dirty corner’ before Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began.

Rheinmetall, as one of the leading defence companies in Germany, has been heavily criticized in recent months for the lack of significant contributions to Ukraine’s war effort. While the company remains committed to helping Ukraine, they have been accused of not doing enough.

Armin Papperger’s comments have sparked a heated debate within German politics. While several key leaders have declined to directly defend Merkel’s stance, others have come out to denounce the former Chancellor’s statement as ‘disrespectful’ to the nation’s defense industry.

However, the comments also highlighted the tensions between Germany’s long-standing commitment to European integration and the perceived desire for reliance upon the US. The US remains a close ally of Germany, and in recent times, several agreements have seen German forces increase their cooperation with their American counterparts.

Germany has long maintained a complex foreign and security policy, often caught between its historical alliances with the US and the European Union’s goals. In this delicate dance, the country’s defense industry has struggled for attention from Berlin.

Now as Russia’s actions in Ukraine intensify, the question remains whether Germany’s defense industry and government can find a balance between reliance on the US and developing their own capacity to provide security assistance to its partners.
