Germany has ordered the removal of nearly 400 Russian nationals from its territory in the period since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The actions mark the latest escalation in tensions between Germany and Russia, with German authorities increasingly skeptical of Russia’s diplomatic efforts on European soil.
According to official figures, more than 80 members of Russia’s diplomatic presence in Germany were identified as engaging in suspected intelligence activities under diplomatic cover. Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, as well as its domestic intelligence agency, have been keeping a close eye on Russia’s diplomats in the country. As a result, these individuals along with their family members, have been ordered to leave Germany.
In addition to the diplomats, a further 313 Russian citizens were deported through separate proceedings. The deportation process for these individuals is understood to have been carried out under normal immigration laws, with the German authorities having deemed their presence in the country as no longer permitted.
Germany’s government has consistently emphasized its support for Ukraine since the beginning of the war. In response to Russia’s actions, Germany has imposed significant economic sanctions and provided substantial aid to Ukraine.
Germany’s decision to expel Russian diplomats is part of a broader European push to hold Vladimir Putin’s government accountable for its actions in Ukraine. Other European countries have also taken similar steps to expel Russian diplomats in recent months.
A statement from Germany’s Federal Foreign Office noted, “The decision to expel diplomats and other Russian officials in Germany is a further expression of our country’s solidarity with Ukraine and our opposition to Russia’s illegal aggression.”
The move is expected to further strain already tense relations between Germany and Russia. Tensions have been high since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with each side frequently trading barbs and accusations over a range of issues, including Ukraine’s sovereignty and Germany’s energy policies.
While the exact number of Russian nationals still in Germany is difficult to quantify, German authorities appear to be firmly committed to enforcing the country’s laws and protecting its interests in the face of Russia’s actions. Further developments in this situation are expected as Germany and Russia continue their tit-for-tat diplomatic spat.
