Government Invests $1 Billion in Sustainable Community Development Initiative “Here”

Washington D.C. – In a bid to address the pressing issue of community development and sustainability, the U.S. government has announced a $1 billion investment towards an innovative initiative called “Here”. This ambitious project aims to revitalize and revitalize local neighborhoods across the country, fostering inclusive growth and providing opportunities for residents to thrive.

According to a statement released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), “Here” will support the development of 20 pilot communities nationwide, with each site receiving up to $50 million in funding. The selected areas will be chosen based on their potential for transformative change, with a focus on neighborhoods that have historically been underserved or under-resourced.

At the heart of “Here” is the concept of placemaking, which emphasizes the importance of community-centered design and engagement. By investing in local leadership, community engagement, and inclusive development practices, the initiative aims to create thriving, vibrant communities that reflect the unique needs and aspirations of their residents.

“We believe that everyone deserves to live in a neighborhood that is safe, affordable, and full of opportunities,” said Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia L. Fudge. “Here is a critical investment in our nation’s future, and we are committed to working with local leaders and community members to ensure that these projects are tailored to meet the needs of the people who call these neighborhoods home.”

Some of the key areas of focus for the “Here” initiative include:

Affordable housing and community land trusts
Infrastructure investments, including green spaces and transportation improvements
Economic development and job creation through small business support and workforce training programs
Community engagement and leadership development, including partnerships with local organizations and residents

The $1 billion investment will be allocated over a period of five years, with regular evaluations and assessments to ensure that the initiative is meeting its objectives and having a positive impact on the communities it serves. HUD has also established a national advisory committee comprised of experts in community development, urban planning, and social justice to provide guidance and oversight throughout the process.

With the launch of “Here”, the U.S. government has taken a significant step towards addressing the pressing issues of community development and sustainability. By empowering local leadership and investing in community-centered design, the initiative has the potential to create lasting, positive change in neighborhoods across the country.

In a statement, community development expert and advisory committee member, Dr. Angela Glover Blackwell, underscored the importance of this initiative. “For too long, communities of color and low-income neighborhoods have been left behind, with limited access to resources and opportunities. Here is a game-changer, and we are committed to working with HUD to ensure that this investment is leveraged to maximum impact.”
