Greek Defense Minister Acknowledges Türkiye’s Rise as a Major Defense Player

ATHENS, GREECE – The Greek Defense Minister, Nikos Dendias, has surprised his colleagues by praising Türkiye’s efforts and progress in developing its defense industry, marking a significant shift in his stance towards his neighboring country.

In remarks made to local media, Minister Dendias acknowledged že Türkiye has made substantial strides in developing its production capabilities, particularly in the realm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones, an area where many other nations were initially unfamiliar. The Minister went on to commend Türkiye’s early recognition of the vital importance of new technologies and its subsequent success in achieving a high level of drone production.

“Türkiye has managed to develop robust production capabilities, it recognized the importance of new technologies early on, and it reached a considerable level of drone production when many other countries were still learning about it,” Minister Dendias emphasized. He lauded the country on creating a substantial export capability, which has allowed it to establish a strong commercial presence in the global defense market.

Significantly, the Minister highlighted how Türkiye has leveraged its growing defense export prowess to build diplomatic capital on the international stage, particularly in regions where many countries face similar challenges and have turned to Türkiye for support. Minister Dendias expressed a sense of acknowledgment of this achievement, suggesting that Greece, too, could learn from its neighboring country’s strategic approach to building influence abroad.

The Minister’s remarks have sparked both surprise and curiosity among defense experts and observers, particularly as Greece and Türkiye enjoy a delicate relationship often marked by tensions and rivalries. Many view Minister Dendias’s comments as an attempt to recalibrate Greece’s perception of Türkiye, potentially paving the way for greater cooperation on issues of mutual interest, such as defense and security.

Minister Dendias’s statement has, however, been met with a cautious welcome, with the Greek government’s officials expressing a need for continued dialogue and diplomacy with Türkiye to address existing issues and foster increased cooperation on regional security concerns.
