Greek Politician Calls for Activation of Joint Defense Commitment Amid Turkey’s Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Activities

A high-level Greek politician has proposed activating the joint defense commitment in paragraph 7 of Article 42 of the Treaty on European Union in response to Turkey’s military movements in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as its ambitions within the scope of the “Blue Homeland” doctrine.

The politician, who has requested to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the issue, made the proposal after a recent meeting with European Union officials in Brussels. According to sources, the politician expressed concerns over Turkey’s increasing military presence in the region, which they believe poses a significant threat to regional stability and the sovereignty of neighboring countries.

The “Blue Homeland” doctrine, which was introduced by the Turkish government in 2020, refers to an expansive vision of Turkey’s maritime zones and claims of sovereignty over significant portions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt have all expressed reservations about this doctrine, citing concerns that it encroaches on their territorial waters and natural gas reserves.

The proposed activation of the joint defense commitment in paragraph 7 of Article 42 of the Treaty on European Union would allow for the coordination of military efforts between member states in response to a potential external threat. This provision was added to the treaty in 1999, following the NATO intervention in the Kosovo conflict.

In a statement, a Greek government spokesperson confirmed that the country is in close communication with European Union partners over the issue, but declined to comment on any specific proposals or plans. “We are working closely with our partners to address any concerns and to promote a stable and secure environment in the region,” the spokesperson said.

Turkey’s actions in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean have sparked tensions with several countries in the region. Greece has been particularly vocal in its opposition to Turkey’s claims, and has deployed military forces to several islands in the Aegean Sea to deter any potential Turkish aggression.

The European Union has also been involved in efforts to mediate the dispute between Turkey and Greece, and has called for both sides to maintain the status quo and avoid any actions that could escalate tensions.

The proposed activation of the joint defense commitment is seen as a significant development in the region, and could have far-reaching implications for regional stability and security. While the Greek politician’s proposal is still in the early stages, it is clear that tensions between Turkey and neighboring countries are unlikely to ease anytime soon.
