Gulf Arab Official Cautions on Iran-US Talks as Diplomatic Path Remains Uncertain

A high-stakes diplomatic push to broker an end to the nearly 40-year-old Iran-US conflict remains stuck, with both sides struggling to find common ground, a senior Gulf Arab official has told POLITICO. According to the official, who is directly involved in the talks, the issue is not just about finding a mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict but also about saving face for both the Trump administration and the Iranian government.

The Trump team, the official said, is eager to secure an agreement and end the longstanding impasse with Tehran. However, the Iranian side has so far refused to budge, insisting on certain preconditions that Washington has deemed unacceptable. The official acknowledged that the main obstacle to progress lies in the fundamental differences between the two nations’ respective positions on key issues, including the US sanctions against Iran and its nuclear program.

“It is clear that the Iranians are still not ready to make concessions on the key issues,” the official stated. “They want certain guarantees, but we believe they are not flexible enough to come to an agreement. The Americans are frustrated and feel that we are not moving in the right direction.”

The stakes are high, with the Trump administration reportedly anxious to secure a breakthrough on the conflict before its term expires in January 2025. However, the Gulf Arab official warned that Iran, too, needs a way to “save face” and avoid appearing to have given in to US pressure.

“The Iranians need to save face and maintain their dignity as a nation,” the official emphasized. “They cannot be seen as having surrendered to the great Satan or conceded to demands made by the Americans. That’s why they are insisting on certain preconditions.”

Moreover, the official noted that the US side appears to be struggling to grasp the intricacies of Iranian politics and the importance of preserving national dignity. “It’s not just about the Americans getting what they want; it’s also about the Iranians getting what they need,” the official said.

The diplomatic stalemate has significant implications for the region and the global community, with ongoing tensions between the US and Iran posing a risk to regional stability and global security. As talks continue, it remains to be seen whether both sides can find common ground to secure a breakthrough and salvage the fragile diplomatic process.
