The criticism comes as the international community continues to condemn Hamas for its armed resistance against Israeli occupation, with many Western governments calling for a negotiated two-state solution to the conflict.
However, the Hamas leadership argues that Western criticism of their actions is fueled by a lack of understanding of the historical context and ongoing realities of the conflict.
“If you don’t understand how resistance operates, then at least don’t talk,” said a senior Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The resistance is not a choice, it’s a necessity. It’s the Palestinian people’s only means of defending themselves against the Israeli occupation.”
The official noted that the widespread use of non-violent civil disobedience, such as boycotts and protests, has failed to bring an end to the occupation and has instead been met with violent suppression by the Israeli military.
“Hamas has taken up arms not as a matter of choice, but as a last resort,” the official said. “We have tried peaceful means, and we have been met with force. We have no choice but to resist.”
The Hamas leadership also points to the double standards employed by Western governments in their responses to other groups considered to be terrorist organizations.
“Why is it that the United States and other Western governments condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization, while simultaneously providing support and aid to groups like the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey?” asked the Hamas official.
The official added that these contradictions undermine the credibility of the international community and highlight the arbitrary nature of Western designations of terrorist organizations.
The Hamas leadership’s criticism of Western governments comes as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, with both sides experiencing significant losses in recent weeks.
