A powerful tropical cyclone forecast to become Hurricane Lala has prompted the issuance of watches and warnings across the Hawaiian Islands, with a rare hurricane warning being put into effect for the Big Island of Hawaii and a tropical storm warning for Maui County.
According to the National Weather Service, hurricane watches were also issued for the islands of Oahu and Kauai, while tropical storm watches were issued for the islands of Lanai and Molokai. These watches indicate that hurricane or tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours, prompting residents to take necessary precautions and prepare for extreme weather conditions.
As of Wednesday morning, Tropical Cyclone Lala was located approximately 350 miles south-southwest of the Big Island of Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 55 miles per hour and a central pressure of 997 millibars. The system is forecast to continue strengthening as it moves northwestward towards the Hawaiian Islands.
“Hurricane Lala poses a significant threat to the state, and we are urging residents to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety,” said Governor Josh Green of Hawaii in a statement released by his office. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The National Weather Service has advised residents to review their emergency plans, stock up on essential supplies, and stay informed about the latest developments through local news and weather reports. The service also warned that hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge could lead to significant disruptions, including power outages, flooding, and landslides.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid traveling during the storm. Those in flood-prone areas are urged to move to higher ground and avoid areas near rivers and streams. The state’s emergency management officials have activated the State Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response and relief efforts.
This is not the first time that the Hawaiian Islands have been affected by a powerful hurricane. Hurricane Iniki, which struck Kauai in 1992, is still remembered as one of the most damaging storms to hit the state in recent history. Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and follow all instructions from local authorities to minimize the impact of Hurricane Lala.
