A Lebanese-based armed group, Hezbollah, has released a statement claiming to have launched a targeted attack on Israeli military forces in the country’s south on Monday night, May 15. The operation appears to be in response to reported Israeli ceasefire violations and attacks on civilian villages in the region.
According to Hezbollah’s statement, the group launched a rocket barrage at a gathering of Israeli soldiers near the town of Haddatha at 11 PM local time. The statement also accused Israeli forces of consistently violating the terms of the 2006 ceasefire, which brought an end to the conflict between the two countries.
This escalation comes amidst reports of escalating tensions between Lebanon and Israel over the past few weeks. Multiple incidents of alleged Israeli cross-border raids, which have reportedly resulted in injuries and fatalities among local residents, have heightened concerns among the Lebanese government and people.
“It’s unacceptable that Israeli forces continue to breach the 2006 ceasefire agreement, causing further instability and putting innocent lives at risk,” an anonymous source close to Hezbollah told Reuters, confirming the group’s involvement in Monday night’s attack.
The Israeli military declined to comment on the incident, citing a policy of not disclosing information related to military operations. Diplomatic sources, however, stated that Israel sees Hezbollah’s activities as a grave threat to regional stability and security.
The attack by Hezbollah is likely to exacerbate existing tensions at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the UN peacekeeping mission in the area. The UN has called upon both sides to exercise restraint, and to engage in dialogue to peacefully resolve differences.
In recent years, the conflict dynamics between Lebanon and Israel have fluctuated between periods of relative calm and acute escalation, often fueled by incidents such as cross-border raids, missile launches, or border disputes.
Local sources report that the situation remains fragile, with a heightened sense of anxiety in areas near the border as residents go about their daily routines. The situation is closely being monitored by UNIFIL troops stationed in the area, and regional and global powers are being closely watched for their stance on the unfolding crisis.
As developments continue to unfold, concerns are being raised that further action by Hezbollah or other regional actors may prompt Israel to impose further restrictions on Palestinian movements in and out of the Gaza region.
