A shocking escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with a rocket allegedly fired by the latter striking a historic Orthodox church in Lebanon. The Saint Georges Orthodox Church in Jdeidet Marjayoun, a picturesque town in the South Governorate, was severely damaged in the attack, leaving many in the local community in shock and grief.
According to eyewitnesses, the rocket, believed to have been fired from Hezbollah-controlled territory, struck the church in the early hours of the morning, causing significant damage to the building’s facade and interior. The explosion also damaged adjacent buildings and structures, displacing scores of residents and causing widespread panic in the area.
The attack has sparked outrage in Lebanon, with many condemning the violence as an unacceptable act of aggression against innocent civilians. The Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in Lebanon, Bishop Gibran Ramah, issued a statement expressing his shock and sadness at the destruction of the historic church, describing it as a “terrible incident” that struck a blow to the hearts of the Lebanese people.
“This attack is a war crime that has no place in our war-torn region,” said Bishop Ramah, calling for an immediate end to the violence and a commitment from all parties to protect the rights and safety of civilians. “We need to put an end to this senseless destruction and focus on finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.”
The incident has also drawn international condemnation, with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jan Kubis, expressing his deep concern at the escalation of violence in the region. “This attack is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of military action on civilians and civilian infrastructure,” said Kubis, calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and a renewed commitment to peace and stability in Lebanon.
For its part, Hezbollah has issued a statement denying responsibility for the attack, alleging that it was the result of Israeli aggression. However, many in the region remain skeptical of the militant group’s claims, citing a long history of similar incidents and the group’s penchant for using civilians as human shields.
As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Jdeidet Marjayoun and Lebanon at large remain resolute in their commitment to peace and stability, calling for an end to the violence and a renewed focus on rebuilding and reconciliation.
